Bleisure travel: what it means and who pays for what
Bleisure travel (business + leisure) is a business trip that you extend with personal time: a weekend after a conference, a few days before a client visit, or a partner joining you for the last nights. The work part is paid by your company; the leisure part is yours. The hard part is drawing the line between them.
Bleisure meaning in one sentence
"Bleisure" is a blend of business and leisure: one trip, with work days and personal days, where the company covers the business purpose and the traveller covers the rest. It is also called blended travel.
Bleisure vs workcation vs digital nomad
| Why you travel | Who pays travel | Typical length | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bleisure / blended trip | A work reason: meeting, conference, project | Company for the business part, you for the extra days | Business days plus, typically, a weekend or a few days |
| Workcation | Your choice of place; you keep working remotely | Usually you | One to several weeks |
| Digital nomad | Lifestyle; work is location-independent | You | Months |
Only bleisure has two payers for one trip, which is why it is the only one that needs an expense split.
Common shapes of a bleisure trip
- Weekend extension: work until Thursday or Friday, fly home on Sunday.
- Early arrival: come two days before the conference to see the city or adjust to the time zone.
- The weekend in between: meetings on Friday and Monday, and staying over is cheaper than flying back and forth.
- Family joins: a partner or children fly in for the leisure part, sometimes sharing your hotel room.
- Mixed days: a morning meeting and a free afternoon, every day of the trip.
Who pays for what on a bleisure trip
The fair and common answer: the company pays what the trip would have cost without the leisure days; you pay what the leisure days add. In practice that means:
- Flight: company, unless staying longer made the ticket more expensive; the difference is yours.
- Hotel: split by nights; a night is business if the business-only trip would have needed it, and nights around leisure days are personal.
- Meals and transport: business on work days, personal on leisure days.
- Family: the company pays what it would have paid for you alone.

What a good bleisure travel policy says
If your company doesn't have one, these are the points worth agreeing in writing, even in a short email to your manager:
- Is extending allowed, and who approves it?
- How much extra time is fine (for example, up to a weekend or a set number of days)?
- How the airfare is compared: the business-only fare on the booking date, and who pays a difference.
- Whether the company-booked hotel can be kept for personal nights at the same rate, paid by you.
- Whether family can join, and that the company pays only the single-traveller cost.
- Whether company travel insurance and duty-of-care support cover your personal days. If they don't, you may need your own travel insurance for those days.
- How to report it: only the business part, with full receipts attached.
Why bleisure is easy to get wrong in an expense report
One flight and one hotel invoice cover both parts of the trip, so there is no natural line on the receipt. In industry data reported by Skift, 79% of blended travellers stayed in the same accommodation for both parts (Skift, June 2025). Travel management companies are starting to add tools for this; until your company has one, you usually end up with a spreadsheet. If that's you, start with our travel expense report template or let the BlendTrip app do the split.
Questions
What does bleisure mean?
Bleisure combines business and leisure: a work trip extended with personal days, where the company pays for the business part and the traveller pays for the leisure part.
Is bleisure the same as blended travel?
Yes. Blended travel is another name for the same thing: business and leisure in one trip.
Is bleisure travel allowed?
It depends on your employer. Many companies allow it if you ask in advance and pay for everything the leisure days add. Ask for the rules in writing before you book.
Do I need my own travel insurance for the leisure days?
Check whether your business travel insurance covers personal days before you go. If it doesn't, buy your own cover for those days.
How do I report a bleisure trip?
Submit only the business part: business nights, your flight minus any extra fare caused by staying longer, and work-day expenses, with the full receipts attached.
